Facebook is definitely gaining more and more traffic every day and the trend is likely to push it to where MySpace is now in the nearest future.
I think it’s great. It is the first social networking website worth making to the top positions in my opinion. Balanced navigation, light design, and great backend.
Yes, we do hope that all those millions would soon migrate to 4ppl.com, but for now I am happy to see how PHP/MYSQL technology effectively performs in real life HIGH-SCALE conditions. This is the example that effectively proves that ASP, Oracle DBs, custom webservers are not the only choice. Open-source platforms can perform just as well or even better. Shark is a LAMP+AJAX software and it WILL be capable to run sites of the size of Facebook. Period.

Make Meaning Or Die
Yes Andrey I totally agree… Its a light friendly design… has a balanced and easy navigation… i can not say much about that backend
but i can see it works very fast & fine…
The success of Facebook, MySpace & Friendster is the easy handling and the plenty features they offer… I guess its kinda of a snowball system .. all that communitys have an easy way for their members to invite friends from other sites/messengers.
There are also already plenty sites like that and it will be harder and harder each day to beat them since most of their member are also member of MySpace & Friendster etcand will get tired of being member of the same type of community again and again… I guess the key for beating them is a good and fast backend… great features that are new and not common in other sites like that and of course a nice simple design that focus on the handling of all that features…
There are many sites that are so confusing that even u know already about that kind of sites you have an hard time to get through and even there are great features your not able to use them since its to complicated and you cant find them…
Its bad to say but most internet users have an hard time for doing simple things and its also hard for them to find a button that shows directly in front of their nose… So the ideal site offers great features as already discussed here but is very simple and clear so nobody will have an hard time on browsing and using the features….

Very true subx. I believe facebook will surpass hi5, myspace, orkut and friendster very soon - all thanks to clean, lightweight design and thought-out navigation. IMO it is already a little cluttered compared to what it used to be, but compared to myspace - it’s heaven.
